The engine above is called the "flat" or "opposed" engine. This engine is not used in that many vehicles today except for a select few. They are common in cars such as the Subaru, Porsche, and Volkswagen. Besides cars they are also used in aircraft, buit only eirplanes. They are used in airplanes because of their horizantal format for the pistons.
