MS-DOS personal computer operating systems evolve, they have become less and less reliant on DOS or MS-DOS® as their underlying operating system. Windows 3.x was nearly entirely reliant on the presence of MS-DOS, and although Windows 95 and Windows 98 were less reliant, MS-DOS, in some form, was still needed.
