What are pips?

What are pips? Each pip is 1/10.000 units of currency, ie 0.0001 to the euro EUR-USD pair. As an example, we cite the following bid / ask of the EUR-USD: Bid (buy): 1.1549 / Ask (sell): 1.1552.
