Barcelona has acquired it's high hipness factor actually only rather recently and also the city picture has changed quite a lot in the last years, mainly and most notably starting with the urban and infrastructure developments in preparation for the 1992 olympic games. Neighbourhoods like El Raval, El Born now filled with bars, fashion shops, art galleries or places who are a mixture of the three, before were places with only pictoresque interest for tourists (and rather at daytime).
